The Results are In

Unfortunately, after watching all the debates and so much of the coverage for the last 21 months, I fell asleep for the results......and the speeches. And after hearing so much about who said what this morning, Dell and I went straight to youtube.com to see for ourselves. WOW, what a powerful, uplifting and inspiring speech President-elect Obama gave. Such hope for the future, without being naive about it. And yes, it's just a speech, so hopefully he'll be able to deliver......

And when I heard him talk about Ann Nixon Cooper, the 106 year-old from Atlanta who waited in line to vote, I was amazed to be reminded of what one person went through in her lifetime. This nation has seen so much in such a relatively short time.

Isaac,

I hope that when you get older you appreciate the people who have gone before you - all races, beliefs, and political backgrounds - and learn exactly what this country was founded on and embrace it. I really didn't like history classes when I was growing up, and I don't understand why that was the case. Maybe my teachers didn't have the excitement for it that is needed to teach it...but I hope you learn from my mistakes and can enjoy learning about the history of this nation and other nations.

It's so exciting to think that today women and minorities can cast a vote to choose who they want as their president. But to share that excitement you have to realize that wasn't always the case. It's so easy to forget, since my generation never saw that first hand. But since Senator Barack Hussain Obama was elected president, there has been so much attention to the blaring fact that he is our first African-American president. And with that there has been so much talk of the civil rights era, and how proposterous it was to think about the idea of having such a president just 50 years ago......or even 30 or 20 years ago.

All I can say is embrace your history and never stop learning about it......
