Isaac's first trip to the Texas Children's ER

Since he was born Dell and I were told that if Isaac's temperature were to go above 100.4 that we need to take him to the Texas Children's Emergency Room. Well, last night I decided to take his temperature since he hadn't been feeling well (getting a little congested and drooling a little more than usual - which is apparently an early sign of RSV which he already had and I wanted to avoid again if possible). I took it twice and both times it read 100.4, so we got a little scared and loaded him up for the trip downtown. This was at 10pm, and I was also a little concerned that he hadn't eaten since 5pm (he has been on a very good schedule of eating every 4 hours). Well, once we got him ready to go, drove downtown, and found parking it was 11pm. When I saw the waiting room for the ER I thought we were in line for a Hannah Montana concert or something. So, we got checked in, and about 30 minutes later the nurse took his temperature and listened to his heart and lungs......then we were told that since he was so young we could go across the hall to the RTC waiting room. Ironically, that stands for Rapid Treatment Center. When we got in there, thankfully there was only one other child in there. Dell and I kept falling asleep ourselves once we got situated. Another reason I could tell Isaac wasn't feeling well was because he had been sleeping ever since I picked him up from daycare at around 5:30pm......and when he started to FINALLY get fussy and wake up a little bit around 3am (that's right, 3am) I started to feed him. He got about halfway through his bottle and started coughing HORRIBLY. His face was beat read and it took him a second to catch his breath after coughing so hard. So the lady at the desk told me to go back across the hall and have the nurse check him out again. When she looked at him again and took his vitals she got a room ready for him and they dropped some saline down his nose then stuck a small suction tube down his nose to suck up all that mucus. It was so hard to watch them do that since he was crying so hard. :-( When the doctor came in he said he thought Isaac looked good. His oxygen levels were good and his lungs were clear. He told me to try putting saline in the nebulizer machine instead of the Albuteral solution to see if that would clear him out. Also, he informed me that since he was now 3 months old the temperature to be concerned about is 102.2. Wish I would have known that earlier......we could have probably avoided all that. But honestly, I'm glad we took him there. They were more confident than the other ER we went to a few weeks ago (that hospital was attached to my doctor's office so she had us go over to have them run tests......that's when he was diagnosed with RSV.) And this doctor really knew what he was talking about. So, since he was running a slight fever I stayed home with him on Tuesday.
